Recovering deleted Word documents depends on how they were lost. Unsaved crashes, accidental deletion, and overwriting each have different — and often quick — recovery paths.
Part 1. Recover Unsaved Word Documents (AutoRecover)
If Word crashed or closed without saving, check AutoRecover:
Method 1 — Inside Word: File → Info → Manage Document → Recover Unsaved Documents
Method 2 — Manual file path (Windows): C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\
Or press Win + R → type %appdata%\Microsoft\Word → Enter
| Scenario | Recovery Method | Location to Check |
|---|---|---|
| Word crashed mid-edit | AutoRecover temp file | %appdata%\Microsoft\Word\ |
| Closed without saving | Unsaved Documents folder | File → Info → Manage Document |
| Deleted .docx file | Recycle Bin | Desktop → Recycle Bin |
| Deleted and Recycle Bin emptied | Data recovery software | Drive sector scan |
| Saved over by accident | OneDrive Version History | OneDrive.com → right-click → Version History |
| System restore point | Previous Versions | Right-click folder → Previous Versions |
⚠️ Important: AutoRecover is not the same as a normal save. AutoRecover files are temporary — they are deleted when you close Word normally (with or without saving). Only a crashed or abnormally-closed session leaves AutoRecover files for you to find.
💡 Tip: Set AutoRecover to save every 1–2 minutes: File → Options → Save → "Save AutoRecover information every X minutes." The default 10 minutes can mean losing significant work; 1–2 minutes loses almost nothing.
Part 2. Restore Deleted .docx From Recycle Bin
Files deleted normally go to Recycle Bin:
- Open Recycle Bin on the Desktop
- Search for
.docxor the filename - Right-click → Restore → file returns to original location
Part 3. Recover From Previous Versions
Right-click the folder that contained the document → Properties → Previous Versions → select a date → Open → copy the file out.
💡 Tip: If the document was on OneDrive, right-click it in OneDrive.com → Version History. OneDrive keeps 30 days of version history and can restore an earlier version of the file even if you saved over it.
Part 4. Recover Overwritten Word Documents
For Word documents saved over by accident:
- Word's Built-in Versions: Open the file → File → Info → "Manage Document" → look for auto-saved versions from before the overwrite
- OneDrive Version History: OneDrive.com → right-click file → Version History
- Previous Versions: Right-click folder → Previous Versions
| Recovery Method | Works For | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Word AutoRecover | Unsaved crash recovery | AutoRecover must be enabled |
| Word Manage Document | Versions before overwrite | File saved via OneDrive/AutoSave |
| OneDrive Version History | Overwritten files | File stored in OneDrive |
| Previous Versions | Any folder-level recovery | System Protection must be enabled |
| Recycle Bin | Normally deleted .docx | Not for Shift+Delete |
| Data recovery software | Permanently deleted .docx | Act quickly before overwrite |
💡 Tip: If the document was on OneDrive, right-click it in OneDrive.com → Version History. OneDrive keeps 30 days of version history and can restore an earlier version of the file even if you saved over it.
🗣️ r/techsupport user: "Saved over a 20-page report by accident. Went to File → Info → Manage Document and found an auto-saved version from 8 minutes before. Word had been saving every 10 minutes — got almost everything back."
🗣️ r/MSOffice tip: "OneDrive version history is the best insurance against overwriting Word docs. Every time you save, OneDrive stores a version. I've restored documents to specific points in the editing history multiple times."
Part 5. Recover Permanently Deleted Word Files With Ritridata
For .docx files permanently deleted (Shift+Delete or emptied Recycle Bin), Ritridata scans the drive and recovers deleted Word documents from sectors.
Step 1 — Select the drive where the Word file was stored
Step 2 — Run a scan and filter by .docx or .doc extension
Step 3 — Preview and recover the Word document to a safe location
FAQ
Where does Word save AutoRecover files? Default location: C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\. Check in Word under File → Options → Save to see the exact path. On Mac: ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery/.
Can I recover a Word document I saved over? Yes — if OneDrive version history was active, or if Word's AutoSave captured a version before the overwrite. Check File → Info → Manage Document in Word, and OneDrive.com version history.
How do I find the temp file for an unsaved Word document? Word creates temp files with a ~WRL prefix. Search for ~WRL*.tmp in the Windows temp folder (%temp%) or in the document's folder location.
What is the difference between AutoRecover and AutoSave in Word? AutoRecover is a local backup saved to AppData — it helps after crashes. AutoSave (available in Microsoft 365) continuously saves to OneDrive in real-time. Both are useful; AutoSave is more reliable as it saves to the cloud after every keystroke change.
